| Shrines and temples of Nikko were registered
as World Heritage site at the 23rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage
Committee held at Marakesh in Morocco in December 1999. You will
be able to have an easy access to those Toshogu, Rinnoji, Futarasan
Shinkyo Bridge from Hotel Harumoto. |
It was built in 1617 as a mousoleum of Ieyasu
Tokugawa. Today's main buildings were built under the 3rd general
Iemitsu's instruction in 1636. Gongen-zukuri constructing style
became leading one since its construction. Also, its curving and
painting skills were the best standard at that time. Eight buildings
such as Honden main hall, Ishino-ma stone room, Haiden pray hall,
Youmeimon gate have been inscribed as national treasure, and 34
other buildings are designated as important national property.

The origine of the Rinnoji temple was the
Shihonryuji temple built by priest Shoto in the 8th century. The
Shihonryuji temple developped as the center of temples of Nikko.
In addition, the Shihonryuji temple came to be respected by Tokugawa
shogunate when the 3rd general Iemitsu's Taiyuin Mausoleum was built
in the same area in 1653. The Taiyuin Mausoleum, Aino-ma room, Haiden
pray hall have been inscribed as national treasurem and 37 other
buildings have been designated as important cultural property.

The Futarasan shrine has gathered respect
as the center of mountainious worship of Nikko since early times.
Especially, many shrines were built in the middle age. Also, Tokugawa
shogunate constructed additional shrines in Edo period. 23 builsings
including Honden main hall and Shinkyo bridge have been designated
as important cultural property.
